Reader tips & tricks competition
The Pastel community extends to all corners of South Africa (and beyond!), and we thought it would be great for you all to share your favourite time-saving tips in our ongoing ‘Reader tips & tricks’ competition launched earlier this year in the online version of Insight. So thanks to all those who sent their tips for the most recent competition, and well done
to those who were published.
How it works

Send us your best Pastel software tip and you could win a R750 Incredible Connection voucher. The tip may help increase efficiency or solve a difficult problem. Either way, we’d love to hear from you. All tips are tried, tested and rated by our support department. The winner will be announced in the next Insight and we also publish runner-up tips, so everyone can benefit from your genius. Simply e-mail your top tip to insight@pastel.co.za, write Pastel tips and tricks competition in the subject line and be sure to include your Serial Number and Customer Number.
Recons
I’ve been using Pastel since 1992 and have always done my bank recon without entering the bank balance. As you reconcile items against your bank statement, the difference displayed is your bank balance. If it differs, you know that you’ve missed something. You can then just subtract from where you are on your bank statement and the difference is a deposit or cheque missed. This is much easier than getting to the end and finding that you don’t balance. Once you are at the month end, you can enter your balance and print.

Two more keyboard shortcuts
You missed the two biggest time-saving keyboard shortcuts in your recent article. When in any Edit Masterfile screen, the shortcut to save is CTRL and Enter. You can also move up and down between records using the Page Up and Page Dn keys.

No need to type descriptions
When processing general journals, instead of typing the entire description of the account, just insert a comma (,) and enter. The full des- cription comes up automatically.

No network – no problem
I really enjoy the fact that when working in an environment that doesn’t have a network, and others are busy in the same file of Pastel, I am able to process a batch, export it and import it onto their system without losing any information that they have entered. I then make a backup of my company and restore the new information onto my computer. Bear in mind that the invoices imported will follow the invoice numbering sequence of the user importing the batch. You need to adjust this by clicking on Setup | Company Parameters prior to the restoring process.
