System requirements

Before attempting the installation, first check whether you meet the minimum system requirements (see table below).

Note: You will also need a CD-ROM facility and Internet Explorer 6 or higher. Windows XP Home and Windows Vista Home are not recommended for a network environment.

Log on as the Windows Administrator of your computer

If you are logged on as a Standard Windows user you will be restricted from performing certain tasks, for example, installing or uninstalling a programme. In order to have full rights to perform an installation you therefore need to log on as the Administrator.

  • Go to the Control Panel and select User Accounts.
  • Check your user name and make sure it shows as Administrator under Group (see the screenshot example below).
  • If your user is not an Administrator please change the user’s rights by double clicking on the user name and selecting the Administrator group.

Note: Your IT personnel should be able to assist with creating Administrator rights.

Disable your Anti-Virus programme

With some Anti-Virus programmes you might find the Anti-Virus programme interrupting or preventing the installation from completing successfully. To ensure a successful installation we recommend disabling your Anti-Virus software before running the installation. After the installation is complete you can enable the Anti-Virus programme again.

Because of the large number of Anti-Virus programmes available there are several ways to disable your Anti-Virus, with a typical example below:

  • Right click on My Computer and go to Manage.
  • The Computer Management screen will appear.
  • Go to Services and Applications and select Services.
  • Look for your Anti-Virus Services.
  • Right click on the Anti-Virus service and select Stop.

Add the Pervasive ports to your Windows Firewall

When installing Pastel Partner or Pastel Xpress the Database Manager, Pervasive will also be installed.

We therefore recommend that the two Pervasive ports are added as exceptions on your Windows Firewall.

A firewall protects your computer from potentially harmful applications. A port is a communication channel between Windows and other applications. By adding your two Pervasive ports it will allow the full Pervasive installation without interruption and ensures the installation is not a threat to the security of your Windows. It also helps prevent an Error Code 20.

Go to Start and select the Control Panel. Open the Windows Firewall. Go to the Exceptions tab and click on Add Port. The two Pervasive ports are 1583 and 3351 respectively. See the example below:
