Backups faster than food

When one of the country’s largest fast food franchisees was burgled in the wee hours of the morning and had its server stolen, the owner was understandably feeling anxious. Without his data, his company faced chaos and severe disruption of business.

However, he had subscribed to the IronTree data backup service and his data was safe. Irontree is an automated online backup service recommended by Softline Pastel and the implementation partner at the restaurant, Pilot Software. Pilot Software MD Stephen Corrigan said the restaurateur called the following morning with the news of the theft.

“Within ninety minutes we had someone at the restaurant with all the company’s data,” Corrigan said. “Every byte of it. We discovered that the staff had backed up the data locally too, but that server was also stolen, proving just how vulnerable on-site backups are. Fortunately for them, IronTree had automatically backed up all the data hours before the burglary.”

“The company could continue as if nothing had happened.” Ironically, he said, backing up to a CD per day would cost more than the automated service. “And then people make mistakes, the system doesn’t.”

Incredible accolade for Pastel Accounting

The Pastel Accounting retail sales team has scooped the Incredible Connection Top Accounting Software prize at the annual Incredible Connection supplier dinner.

Pastel Accounting pipped two strong competitors to the post, and was the only software vendor to be honoured this way. Incredible Connection chose its best vendors from a list of more than 160 suppliers.

The award criteria were:

• Consistent year-on-year growth
• In-store marketing and presence
• Active participation in Incredible Connection   catalogues and broadsheets

The 2008 Community Spirit Award also went to Softline Pastel. As the backer of Habitat for Humanity, the Thuthuka Accountancy Olympiad, the 702 Small Business Awards, various Aids Day initiatives and the Easter Egg Drives, Softline Pastel was honoured for its community spirit at the annual Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) awards. This award recognises outstanding community initiatives within South Africa. Softline Pastel had some excellent company on the podium with the likes of Volkswagen SA, Nedbank and Sanlam.

Time is money

Pastel Evolution customers can now add a timesheet administration module to their system. Time and Billing by third-party developer Trew Solutions improves the business processes of service-based organisations with online time sheet administration that’s integrated with Pastel Evolution. It can be used on or offline, allowing consultants in the field to capture their timesheets remotely, thereby speeding up invoicing of field workers.

In online mode, Time and Billing lets users create project templates with any number of tasks. By using these templates as the basis for new projects, customers don’t have to specify tasks each time a new project is created. They can quickly move onto the allocation of resources and immediately start monitoring time booked against projects.

Time booked by a resource can be accepted as is by the project manager or adjusted before accepting. Projects can be invoiced at any stage.

Detailed reporting and analysis of time captured, accepted and invoiced are also available through a number of containers and report templates in the Pastel Business Intelligence Centre module.
